How to Move

Here is a sweet tip from a realtor friend of mine. Save yourself annoyance by packing an “overnight bag.” Grab your favorite piece of carry-on luggage and put the essentials inside it, toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletries, etc., just as if you were leaving on a short trip. Now you know where everything is that you absolutely need during your first hours in your new home.

Big picture- move before you move. Moving to a new home can be an exciting and transformative experience, but it is not without its challenges. From the stress of packing up your belongings to navigating closing dates and adjusting to a new environment, this process is, well, difficult.

Whether you are relocating across town or to a different country, understanding the tasks involved can help you better prepare for this significant life change. Moving to a new home is a big sudden mix of excitement and challenges.

One major challenge is the stress of packing up your belongings. It can be overwhelming to sort through your possessions, decide what to keep or discard, and ensure everything is properly packed. To manage this, start early and create a plan. Break down the packing process into smaller tasks, tackle one room at a time, and consider enlisting help from friends (or from us.)

We can supply packing materials and staff to box everything for you, either during the move or before, according to your schedule. Taking care of the packing saves time, effort, and money in your move.

Another difficulty is navigating closing dates if you’re buying or selling a home. Delays or unexpected changes in these dates can disrupt your moving plans. Staying in close communication with all parties involved—realtors, lenders, etc.—can help minimize surprises and allow for better coordination.

Speaking of coordination: on the day of the move, check your home for forgotten items before the truck pulls away. No one knows your stuff better than you. Your company cannot return to your home a second time without incurring fresh charges.

Adjusting to a new environment is also challenging. This includes getting familiar with the neighborhood, finding new schools or services, establishing routines, and building new social connections. Researching your new neighborhood beforehand can provide valuable information about amenities and resources available nearby. If you are moving to a different country or even just across town but far from your current community, leaving behind familiar surroundings can be emotionally taxing. Get outside. Take a walk.

It’s important to give yourself time to adjust and seek support from family members or local groups with similar interests. To better prepare for this significant life change:

1) Create a timeline: Having an organized schedule will help you stay on track throughout the moving process.

2) Declutter before packing: Take inventory of your belongings and donate/sell items that no longer serve you. This move is an opportunity to let go. Take it. The more you can let go of clutter, the less you will have to move, and the less you will have to deal with on the far end. People in our culture own more than is good for us. Give stuff away.

3) Label boxes: Clearly labeling each box by room will make unpacking much easier.

4) Pack essentials separately: Keep important documents, toiletries, and clothing necessities easily accessible during the move.

5) Notify relevant parties: Inform utilities companies about address changes well in advance.

6) Research local services: Familiarize yourself with the new area by researching schools, doctors, grocery stores, etc.

Your mind is your ally. Stay positive: Embrace the opportunities that come with a fresh start and be open to new experiences. Moving can be challenging, but with careful planning and a positive mindset, you can navigate these difficulties and turn your move into an exciting adventure.

Also, a quick note here on how not to move. Moving can be expensive. Make sure that you are able to afford your move. If you are under financial stress, do as much as you can by yourself. Do not rush the movers or get on the truck for any reason. if you rush the packing process, we are not liable for breakage.

Allowing yourself the luxury of preparation ahead of time will save you money and stress. It paves the way for a healthy transition.
